A documented Space Race

The one who insists on hitting a rock on the moon will not get it, but will end up knowing how to handle the slingshot.                                           Arabian proverb

This proverb sums up the spirit that in the decade of 1960 to 195o led the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union to start a space race culminating in the arrival of American astronauts on Apollo 11 to the Moon in August 1969. There is one little difference between the proverb and reality: the man succeeded in walking onto the Moon. This is one of the most important historical events of the twentieth century that capped a process of technological expertise, but that, in turn, hid a cultural and political confrontation between the two blocs. As mentioned, it was a race, a competition between two parties and countries to step on the moon, so that, when studying this event, it is vital to avoid bias. Therefore,  official press and official news agencies are going to be attended in documenting this historic event. Here are two examples:  Read more…

USA vs USSR: a struggle for world supremacy

March 27, 2012 1 comment

“I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.”

This sentence of John F. Kennedy, perfectly sums up the situation and composition of the world in the Cold War era. On the one hand USA and on the other, the USSR. The capitalist bloc and the communist bloc. Two ideologies, one goal: world domination. Read more…

Jean Baudrillard, discouraging philosopher

“El simulacro no es lo que oculta la verdad. Es la verdad la que oculta que no hay verdad. El simulacro es verdadero”, Jean Baudrillard.

Jean Baudrillard was a French philosopher and sociologist who focused on the contemporary society. In his first book El sistema de los objetos (1968), he tried to apply the concepts of Ferdinand Saussure´s linguistics in Karl Marx´s political and economical theories, analysing the value of changes as significant and the value of use as significant. In that first book, he also analyses the indiference with which North Americans have constructed a new culture of transparence. Read more…

The clockwork orange

Stanley Kubrick’s A clockwork orange based on the novel by Anthony Burgess is one of the good references about this film. I think it is a good reference because, on the one hand, you have a comment from the author, Kubrick : “I have always wondered if there might be a more meaningful way to present a book about a film. To make, as it were, a complete graphic representation of the film, cut by cut, with the dialogue printed in the proper place in relation to the cuts, so that within the limits of still photos and words, an accurate (and I hope interesting) record of a film might be available…This book represents that attempt.” Read more…

Nickelback: The Canadian Encyclopedia

Gure taldeko lana burutzeko Nickelback talde famatua aukeratu dugu. Kanadako talde hau 1995an sortu zen, Alberta-n, eta  denbora aurrera joan ahala, auren ospea hazten joan da, kideen informazioarekin gertatu den bezala.  Honen erantzule nagusia, Internet izan da   baina, sarritan gertatzen den bezala, ez dago talde honen inguruko euskarazko informazio esluragarririk eta, egotekotan, ez da oso zehatza eta luzea ere.  Hau esanda, argi dago, informazio falta hau izan dela artikulu hau aurrera eramatearen arrazoi nagusia. “Clockwork Orange”: Kubrick’s full of surprises

March 27, 2012 1 comment

Everyone can seat around and enjoy themselves while watching Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece “The Clockwork Orange”, but the truth is that few can make out the meticulous details which were thoroughly put on by this connoisseur of the cinema. From the very introduction to the ending scene, the film is jammed with impressive footages making reference to a whole series of phenomena related to the film. As a matter of fact, tepasmas.com, a web site which offers wide and accurate explanations to all these references, can be considered among the best and more relevant resources when carrying out a work on subliminal messages in Kubrick’s “The Clockwork Orange”.

To start with, some places seem to be recurrent for Kubrick. The bar in which the film opens, for instance, is the same one appearing in the distinguished Scottish film “Trainspotting”. The name of the place is “Voloko bar” and it does actually exist, being established in Liverpool, UK. Read more…

Jean Baudrillard´s Matrix

The Matrix gave both cultural theorists and movie enthusiasts an opportunity to investigate the film on a variety of academic grounds.

This implication was brought up within the movie by two references to the work of French sociologist Jean Baudrillard. The first reference is situated towards the beginning of the movie, when Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) grabs the author’s book Simulacra and Simulation to retrieve some mind-altering substances hidden in it. The second is uttered by Morpheus (played by Laurence Fishburne) when he shows Neo the “real world,” saying to him, “Welcome to … the desert of the real.”

It is clear that Jean Baudrillard´s philosophy and thought has become an interest for many intellectuals. That is the case of Baudrillard´s Simulacra and Simulation, in which Baudrillard assumes the proliferation of images in advanced capitalism, with the expansion of commodities and the relentless advance of technologies of visualization and simulation. In the essay, he describes a movement from “representation” to “simulation”. In Baudrillard´s words: Read more…

Relevant sources on Jay Asher

March 27, 2012 Leave a comment

When I came across with the american writer, Jay Asher, I instantly wanted to know more about him. Unfortunately, the information given by Wikipedia wasn’t deep enough to follow his carreer so I decided to seach more about his work.

From his most famous novel, Thirteen reasons why, I found it necessary to analyse which had been his influences or “reasons why” he decanted himself in favour of youth public, instead of adult public. The best way of answering this cuestions was finding an interview made to him, and that is exactly what I got after making some reseaches. This kind of interviews provide a large amount of information about the author that other kind of sources just can’t, such as life experiences or data about their personal motivations and explanations about the novels they’ve written.
